Oblivion and Fallout 3 were still more or less okay on the Gamebryo engine but Fallout New Vegas should never have been released on that engine because of the scope the developers were aiming at. The problem with assets and RAM use for FNV are more game-engine related. A crash when fast-travelling is usually a loading issue and loading issues are often related to RAM use, or more to the point, running out of RAM while loading the assets of the environment you're going to wind-up at.
